Title | Letter from O J L [Oliver Joseph Lodge], Mariemont, Edgbaston, to [Joseph] Larmor |
Creator | Lodge; Sir Oliver Joseph (1851-1940); British physicist |
Recipient | Larmor; Sir Joseph (1857-1942); Irish theoretical physicist |
Date | 22 December 1905 |
Description | He sees from 'The Electrician' that Buchanan [?] thinks he has improved Lorentz. He does not know about [Hendrik] Lorentz, but [George Francis] Fitzgerald never thought of the ellipsoid as compressed, or of anything but a simple distortion, starting one way and elongating the other two ways. Volume change is needed for gravitation, but for nothing else. 'It's all bosh to suppose that motion would cause anything but distortion'. |
