TitleLetter from Mohammed A R Khan, Begumpet, Deccan, India, to Sir Joseph Larmor
CreatorKhan; Mohammed Abdur Rahman (fl.1880s-1940s); Indian astronomer
RecipientLarmor; Sir Joseph (1857-1942); Irish theoretical physicist
Date12 April 1940
DescriptionKhan gives thanks for Larmor's letter and hopes the world will soon be free from totalitarian states. He discusses the power of modern astronomical techniques and more 'homely' astronomy, including his own interest in meteors and zoological light. He notes Larmor's suggestion on the latter, and what he has observed of the gegenschein and undulatory light at Begumpet. Khan writes on the significance of differences in morning and evening zodiacal cones, and the lack of reference to 'false evening' in old Arabic literature, which he thought might be to do with interference in desert conditions. He goes on to discuss the velocity of meteors in the morning and evening; the former he would expect to be brighter, and perhaps the same is true of the zodiacal light. His 1939 summary of meteor observations, almost published, touches on these subjects and he would be pleased to send Larmor a copy.
