Title | Letter from William Jack, 5 St. John's Terrace, Ann Street, Glasgow, [Joseph] Larmor |
Creator | Jack; William (1834-1924); British mathematician and newspaper editor |
Recipient | Larmor; Sir Joseph (1857-1942); Irish theoretical physicist |
Date | 25 December 1910 |
Description | He thanks Larmor for his letter and expresses his gratitude that so many friends have spoken and written about Jack so kindly. He retains his own very different opinions about his services, thinking that Robertson Smith or Thomas Quain [?] would have been better for the university when Jack was a candidate. He believes that Lord Kelvin took a fancy to Jack, having an affection for his father-in-law, Dr [John Pringle] Nichol, who taught astronomy when Kelvin was a student. But Jack is happy that his own students have pleasant memories of him. |
