TitleLetter from Thos H [Thomas Howell] Laby, Natural Philosophy Department, University of Melbourne, to Sir Joseph [Larmor]
CreatorLaby; Thomas Howell (1880-1946); Australian physicist
RecipientLarmor; Sir Joseph (1857-1942); Irish theoretical physicist
Date30 September 1915
DescriptionHe has received a note from [Eric Oswald] Hercus to say he has been appointed radiographer to a military hospital and will be sent to France. He may be able to attend to their paper on the thermal conductivity of air for the Royal Society while he is in London. It was some time since it was presented and [Arthur] Schuster has required some alterations to the paper. Laby does not object to removing the introduction, but thinks deleting the mean value of the themral conductivity derived from existing determinations weakens its value, giving his reasons. The alteration were more than a referee could reasonably ask. L.V. [Louis Vessot] King's paper in the Philosophical Transactions contains the same kind of material which is objected to in their paper. He may ask for the paper to be withdrawn, therefore. He could publish it locally, but a paper by [George Handley] Knibbs was 'buried' that way. Lyle showed him some criticisms by a Royal Society referee, which annoyed Lyle and delayed his paper. All work has ceased because of the war, but Laby has assisted in the design of a respirator for Australian troops.
