Title | Letter from Horace Lamb, Medindee, Burton Road, Didsbury, to [Joseph] Larmor |
Creator | Lamb; Sir Horace (1849-1934); British mathematician |
Recipient | Larmor; Sir Joseph (1857-1942); Irish theoretical physicist |
Date | 19 January 1894 |
Description | Larmor's views on the format of 'Hydrodynamics' carry great weight with Lamb and he agrees it is much safer to adhere to the old style, as he cannot estimate page numbers in quarto with any accuracy. There is great expansion of the section on waves, tides and viscosity, but much will be in small print. Larmor's suggestion to resolve the issue of d's 'is capital' and Lamb has instructed that the proofs should be sent to Larmor. [Oliver Lodge is coming to lecture on interstellar aether, the biggest thing in the universe: 'some people say that O.J.L.'s conceit of O.J.L. is bigger but this is an error'. Lamb has had an amusing row in the office which he will tell Larmor about, and he has managed to appoint a non-London man for assistant, 'a small triumph'. |
