Title | Letter from Horace Lamb, Eskdale via Carnforth, to [Joseph] Larmor |
Creator | Lamb; Sir Horace (1849-1934); British mathematician |
Recipient | Larmor; Sir Joseph (1857-1942); Irish theoretical physicist |
Date | 9 August 1900 |
Description | He has [Ludvig Valentin] Lorenz's collected papers and was dismayed to see the parallels with Lamb's Cambridge Transactions paper. Lorenz's equations are not based upon a physical hypothesis and are not more than plausible. The law of intensity for critical wavelengths is there, as well as a calculation for the falling off in absorption when critical lengths are departed from. Lamb thinks there is no mention of free vibrations, or the assumed greatness of the refraction index of the spheres. He wonders what to do: perhaps a short historical note to the journal to make some amends, or an appendix in his latest work for the London Mathematical Society. In a postscript, Lamb notes that Lorentz's work was originally in Danish, translated into French and published in 1898, a year before his own paper. He asks if Lorenz is dead, since he is edited by another. |
