TitleLetter from John Milne, Shide Hill House, Newport, I.W. [Isle of Wight], to [Joseph] Larmor
CreatorMilne; John (1850-1913); British geologist and seismologist
RecipientLarmor; Sir Joseph (1857-1942); Irish theoretical physicist
Date18 June [1896?]
DescriptionMilne would like to see Kingsmill's data; 'he is a jolly fellow and it is possible that he is right'. He sends his last catalogue of Japan earthquakes, giving dates for large area events which may interest Larmor. He notes a fault ocurring on 28 October 1891, the length of which is known, but not the depth. He gives a small sketch, with a range of mountains 'lumbering down the fault plane', with many bumps, the effects of which went round the world. He references the Bandai volcano eruption of 15 July 1888 in Japan, and its effects, including values for the initial velocity of the ejection material; 'what could be the staggering effect on the Earth?'
