TitleLetter from John Murray, Hotel d'Iena, Paris 16me., to [Joseph] Larmor
CreatorMurray; Sir John (1814-1914); British marine scientist and oceanographer
RecipientLarmor; Sir Joseph (1857-1942); Irish theoretical physicist
Date10 October 1903
DescriptionHe wrote to [George] Chrystal after their conversation and his reply was negative. Chrystal wrote that he must not spend money on useless luxuries, and he can be of no use to the Royal Society nor it to him. Chrystal noted the escalating cost of educating a large family. He referred to the affection he has for Larmor, dating back to a visit in Ireland and Chrystal would do much to please him. If the Royal Society would back them now and again, he would reciprocate. He does not like their lapse from noble founding ideals to 'the occasional promotion of natural knowledgers'. Murray relates how Chrystal was knocked down by a motorcycle and broke his arm; his letter was written under depressing circumstances, therefore.
