TitleLetter from H F [Hugh Frank] Newall, Madingley Rise, Cambridge, to [Joseph] Larmor
CreatorNewall; Hugh Frank (1857-1944) British astrophysicist and educational benefactor
RecipientLarmor; Sir Joseph (1857-1942); Irish theoretical physicist
Date28 January 1906
DescriptionThe plan for Hill to give a lecture is excellent and Newall hopes he will be ready. He has not spoken with Darwin about it. He is sorry to be 'quite at sea' with the aims of the Solar Physics Committee, which seemed concerned with details and the real question was not discussed until nearly 6.00pm. He suggested that [Joseph Norman] Lockyer might be asked to give a statement of contemporary aims, as he is relying on 25 year old 'sailing orders'. Newall wrote to him to say that however sympathetic the Board of Education might be, they would be put in the position of having to justify a new site and the committee would need to be unanimous with a new statement of faith to carry weight with the Board. Lockyer's belief that he is to co-ordinate solar and meteorological observations is a new departure, Newall thinks, and would need the compliance of the Solar Physics Committee. He asks if a new Observatory is to be utilised for this office work, before specifying requirements for a new site.
