Title | Letter from H F [Hugh Frank] Newall, Madingley Rise, Cambridge, to [Joseph] Larmor |
Creator | Newall; Hugh Frank (1857-1944) British astrophysicist and educational benefactor |
Recipient | Larmor; Sir Joseph (1857-1942); Irish theoretical physicist |
Date | 23 January 1907 |
Description | Newall apologises for not sending references, but they were incidental. Exner and Montigny have noted many of the phenomena of scintillation and [Karl] Exner's view seems acceptable, that lenticular masses of air produce image movement along the telescope's axis. Newall imagines how this would occur, and writes that he has collected a lot of material, some useful, but most useless, including photographs of trailing stars. The knots on the trails have different causes, and he had to convince himself that these were not connected with earth tremors. He will repeat [Loranzo] Respighi's work sometime. He hopes that Larmor will not destroy his provisonal idea of vortical whorls in the contact region of differently directed air currents. He notes star flickering by naked eye and through the 25-inch telescope, and variation in the lightness of sky half a degree away from Sirius. |
