Title | Letter from H F [Hugh Frank] Newall, Madingley Rise, Cambridge, to [Joseph] Larmor |
Creator | Newall; Hugh Frank (1857-1944) British astrophysicist and educational benefactor |
Recipient | Larmor; Sir Joseph (1857-1942); Irish theoretical physicist |
Date | 25 March 1911 |
Description | He thinks that Larmor handled yesterday's situation admirably. Newall fears that the President will take decisive action without the approval of the advisory committee. If he takes informal preliminary action, based upon the attitude of the committee, that would by only right as a fair statement of the Cambridge plan as an alternative to Forsterdown. This would enable the committee to weight the relative merits of the two alternatives. Newall would refuse to agree any decisive action on the part of the President, unless approved by scientific advisors. It is a relief that the preparation of the statement is taken out if the committee's hands, if he understands correctly. Newall continues in the same vein, stating that his intention is to help Larmor, and he ought to be explicit on what is possible for the existing Professor of Astrophysics to do. |
