Title | Letter from H F [Hugh Frank] Newall, Madingley Rise, Cambridge, to [Joseph] Larmor |
Creator | Newall; Hugh Frank (1857-1944) British astrophysicist and educational benefactor |
Recipient | Larmor; Sir Joseph (1857-1942); Irish theoretical physicist |
Date | 14 January 1919 |
Description | Larmor's note followed him. He had put the 'Observatory' in his bag for the journey. He had read [John] Evershed's note, and had quieted his doubts by recalling the orbital velocity of Venus, although the planet's diurnal rotation remains unknown. Evershed will be aware of the corrections needed, he thinks. It is striking that Evershed should have such confidence in his observations to test his views about [Otto] Hahn's shift, or against [Albert] Einstein. Newall thinks it strange that people should have the idea of the Earth being able to condition movements of the Sun. He has some strange shifts in lines in sunspot spectra which [George Ellery] Hale thinks may break new ground.
With verso, a draft letter by Joseph Larmor, 20 January 1919, expressing thanks to Parliamentary electors. |
