Title | Letter from [Ernest Fox] Nichols, Columbia University, Department of Physics, Phoenix Laboratory, New York City, to [Joseph] Larmor |
Creator | Nichols; Ernest Fox (1869-1924); American physicist |
Recipient | Larmor; Sir Joseph (1857-1942); Irish theoretical physicist |
Date | 26 October 1907 |
Description | He has just received the enclosed letter, not knowing where it has been for six months, and he hopes it was not important. Morse has got out a fine paper fixing responsibility for complicated reflection curves for many carbonates, sulphates, nitrates, and silicates upon the peculiarities of the oxygen atom. These show a double shift due to atomic weights of the other two elements associated with oxygen in the salts. Nichols has been mulling over the missing time effect in gravitation. He does not think it is yet known if gravitational disturbances travel faster than light. Laplace's argument to the contrary is doubtful. He can think of no astronomical phenomena in the solar system which would show a velocity no greater than that of light, because of eccentirc orbits. Periodic comets might offer hope and he refers to the odd behaviour of Encke's Comet. |
