Title | Letter from J W [John William] Nicholson, Highcliffe, Redcar, Yorkshire, to Joseph Larmor |
Creator | Nicholson; John William (1881-1955); British mathematical physicist |
Recipient | Larmor; Sir Joseph (1857-1942); Irish theoretical physicist |
Date | 1 January 1910 |
Description | Nicholson's letter contained careless wording. He wanted to have Larmor's opinion on the possibility of the analyses in his paper being accepted before preparing the paper for publication. He wanted to develop the detail and to have a typed copy for submission. He will call for the manuscript early next term as he has no other copy. He should have told Larmor of his progress on radiation pressure. He went through [Karl] Schwarzschild's paper, finding his analysis correct, but unnecessarily long and inelegant. Nicholson went on to determining the mean size of particles required for a radiation pressure theory of cometary phenomena. He thinks this will be possible on the shape of the envelope using simple formulae, a determinate of the ratio of radiation pressure to the nucleus constant. He is waiting for some practical details from [Arthur Stanley] Eddington before making the calculations. He has now returned to Schwarzschild, changing his analysis to obtain an exact series for the radiation pressure. He has partly tabulated this but not beyond the extreme values which Schwarzschild uses. If Macdonald has formulae which will give the results, the two independent investigations will be best. Nicholson will open a discusion on the subject at the Observatory Club. He has decided to publish sections of his paper on Hertz waves with the Philosophical Magazine. He would like the [Royal] Society to retain the original paper until an error is found in it. Nicholson is unable to agree with the referees. |
