Title | Letter from W D [William Davidson] Niven, Royal Naval College, Greenwich, to [Joseph] Larmor |
Creator | Niven; Sir William Davidson (1842-1917); British mathematician |
Recipient | Larmor; Sir Joseph (1857-1942); Irish theoretical physicist |
Date | 10 December 1896 |
Description | He apologises for not attending the Mathematical Society meeting as he has a bad cold, and must be right before he goes to Britannia [Royal Naval College Dartmouth]. On Larmor's advice he has added a sketch of the potential to his paper, but is concerned that he has committed 'a frightful blunder' in inverting the potential. He had trouble in accurately determining the coefficients and had to wind it up to allow Buller to take it to town. He asks Larmor to look at the proofs if Council agree to accept the paper. [Hector] Macdonold is 'a litte too evervescent' [eg effervescent] in saying that the potential could not be found. He asks Larmor how to refer to Macdonald's solution within the text. |
