Title | Letter from W D [William Davidson] Niven, Royal Naval College, Greenwich, to [Joseph] Larmor |
Creator | Niven; Sir William Davidson (1842-1917); British mathematician |
Recipient | Larmor; Sir Joseph (1857-1942); Irish theoretical physicist |
Date | 18 October 1897 |
Description | He had Larmor's note with [Robert] Tucker's card and another explaining urgency. Niven thought he had three weeks, but longer time for meditation would make no difference. His work had grown so he cannot have any rival occupations. He could not discharge duties which would require a wide knowledge of modern mathematics. He has written to Tucker to say he appreciates the honour, but could not be President [of the London Mathematical Society]. He would be willing to serve as an ordinary Member of Council. H.M. [Henry Martyn] Taylor is with him, 'what a calamity blindness is!' Niven thanks Larmor for advocacy in his case. |
