Title | Letter from W D [William Davidson] Niven, Royal Naval College, Greenwich, to [Joseph] Larmor |
Creator | Niven; Sir William Davidson (1842-1917); British mathematician |
Recipient | Larmor; Sir Joseph (1857-1942); Irish theoretical physicist |
Date | 20 February 1900 |
Description | He received Larmor's lettter informing him of the award of the Hopkins Prize. He considers Larmor 'a terrible fellow': first trying to put him up as President of the London Mathematical Society, then 'plant me away among the princes & potentates of mathematics & confer a species of immortality upon me'. He does not want to show disrespect to the adjudicators who were favourable towards his paper on ellipsoidal haramonics, however, and [Ernest William] Hobson thought there was some 'good stuff' in it. Niven himself was pleased with some of the results which cost him effort to extract, but he believed that no-one apart from Hobson had looked into it. He asks Larmor if he should make formal acknowledgement of the Prize, if he will receive it at a meeting, and if he needs to make a speech. He invites Larmor to Greenwich. |
