Title | Letter from W D [William Davidson] Niven, Rosedale, St John's Road, Sidcup, to [Joseph] Larmor |
Creator | Niven; Sir William Davidson (1842-1917); British mathematician |
Recipient | Larmor; Sir Joseph (1857-1942); Irish theoretical physicist |
Date | 10 July 1904 |
Description | He writes to say how much he enjoyed the Obituary Notices which Larmor has produced for the Royal Society. He was taken with Lord Rayleigh's biography, revealing Rayleigh's unsuspected feelings and sympathies. Niven was drawn to this more than any others, but Larmor's account of the history of thermodynamics was powerful. He had been reading [Max] Planck's book recently, otherwise he would not have been able to follow it well. [Herbert Hall] Turner's account of [Andrew Ainslie] Common's work was a beautiful tribute by a friend. He hopes Larmor is enjoying his respite, Niven noting that he is going North, but wants to attend the British Association meeting first. He has had some difficulty in swallowing and intended to go to the seaside to shake it off, but was prevented by Admiral [Walter James] Hunt-Grubbe's arrival. |
