Title | Letter from W D [William Davidson] Niven, Eastburn, Sidcup, to [Joseph] Larmor |
Creator | Niven; Sir William Davidson (1842-1917); British mathematician |
Recipient | Larmor; Sir Joseph (1857-1942); Irish theoretical physicist |
Date | 30 January 1906 |
Description | Larmor's letter and enclosures arrived. Niven wrote to [William] Burnside who sent [Alfred North] Whitehead's protest and a draft reply Burnside was sending. Niven advised a soothing response as he sees a deadlock unless amicable relations are established. From the beginning, Whitehead's reactions to Burnside's criticisms have been supercilious and ridiculous. He agrees with Larmor that the paper should go as it is to the printer. In the portion which is not original to Whitehead, it is only his mode of exhibiting the work which is defective. Burnside will come over tomorrow and Niven will write if there is anything to report. Niven is sorry about [George Udny] Yule, but the matter in his papers should not occupy so large a space in the Transactions. His second paper afforded a chance to make a stand. He will retain Whitehead's letter to show to Burnside. |
