Creator | Macdonald; Hector Munro (1865-1935); British mathematician |
Recipient | Larmor; Sir Joseph (1857-1942); Irish theoretical physicist |
Date | 4 May 1903 |
Description | He has been thinking over the problem and discusses it, thinking that the question involved is not insuperable, and he hopes to answer it shortly. Meanwhile, calculations for coefficients fo any number such as 10 would throw no light on the situation: 'the real question being how do the terms from the 500th to 1,000th act when ka is 1,000 say'. It may not be obvious that terms after n=ka do not contribute, he writes, noting that none of the quantities oscillate except one. When he did the problem he did not contemplate the possibility of a sudden jump, noting what he will have to find out and whether the solution will need alteration. |
