TitleLetter from William Ridgeway, Flendyshe, Fen Ditton, Cambridge, to [Joseph] Larmor
CreatorRidgeway; Sir William (1853-1926); Irish classical scholar
RecipientLarmor; Sir Joseph (1857-1942); Irish theoretical physicist
Date2 August 1919
DescriptionRidgeway agrees with Larmor that A.J. [Arthur James] Balfour is the best candidate to be their Chancellor and he has dictated a letter urging Balfour's selection. Balfour refused to stand against Lord Rayleigh last time, which gives him an additional claim. The Speaker is unacademic, knows nothing of the University, and would be run by Trinity. He describes Balfour's grand success in service to the Empire, and he is well known in America. Radcliffe has only been to Cambridge once lately, because of illness, and he gives details of catarrh, jaundice, and treatment. The Arctic weather has made him relapse, but he has managed to write short papers.
