Title | Letter from F G [Francis Grant] Ogilvie, 15 Evelyn Gardens, for The Science Museum, South Kensington, London, to [Joseph] Larmor |
Creator | Ogilvie; Sir Francis Grant (1858-1930); applied mathematician and museum director |
Recipient | Larmor; Sir Joseph (1857-1942); Irish theoretical physicist |
Date | 31 May 1910 |
Description | Ogilvie passed on responsibility for the selection of inspectors to his successor in Whitehall and therefore he can consider Larmor's question without pressure. Mr. [Frank] Horton's prospects for an appointment as an inspector was not good enough to be considered, but Ogilvie has spoken with the Chief Inspector, who concurs with the following points. The staff for inspection of Science and Technical Schools is too small and contains too many men appointed with specialised science subject qualifications. There is a deficiency in technical knowledge and the Board must use vacancies to strengten agriculture, engineering and building trades. Immedaite vacanicoes will be with that in view and it is unlikley that thephysical sciences will be strengthened. Ogilvie is impressed by what Larmor has to say about the energetic and tactful Horton and he should be able to find satisfactory employment. He does not know what is going on at Reading, but suggests that Horton should gain experience in a responsible position in a smaller centre than Cambridge. |
