Title | Letter from J [Joseph] Proudman, 45A Grove Street, Liverpool, to Sir Joseph Larmor |
Creator | Proudman; Joseph (1888-1975); British mathematician and oceanographer |
Recipient | Larmor; Sir Joseph (1857-1942); Irish theoretical physicist |
Date | 28 October 1915 |
Description | He thanks Larmor for his letter, replying that an estimate of the tidal retarding couple has been made by R.A. [Rollin Arthur] Harris in his 'Manual of tides'. He considers [Henri] Poincaré but his result is twenty times too small to account for the lunar effect. He also stated that he did not take into account the large tidal currents near land, and this is all Proudman considered in his letter to Larmor. Mr. R.O. Street has agreed to help Proudman to estimate the effects of these currents, but he has not investigated the discrepency between Harris and Poincaré. the arithmentic connected with Geneva is being done by a graduate of Liverpool. Professor Carey has asked Proudman to write to Larmor on another matter, the utility of men such as Proudman for war work, asking for advice. |
