Title | Letter from W [William] Ramsay, 9 Chepstow Place, Bayswater, to [Philip Thomas] Main |
Creator | Ramsay; Sir William (1852-1916); British physical chemist |
Recipient | Main; Philip Thomas (d.1899); British astronomer and chemist |
Date | 27 September 1887 |
Description | Ramsay has owed Main a letter for some time and missed him at the Spencer's. The equation in Main's letter is a statement of simple thermodynamical law. He discusses this and supposes that Young has sent Main a copy of the Philosophical Magazine papers in which their proof appears. He would glad of any criticisms. Miss Ramsay is not connected to him, coming from the Banff family. Ramsay has been at Bayswater for a fortnight 'grinding...setting things in order' as [Alexander William] Williamson threw nothing away and there was 'the accumulated dirt and residue of forty years to get rid of', including gallons of residues from making chlorines, 100 lbs of copper nitrate and a ton of acid sulphate of potash. He notes the preparation of lectures and asks if Main will give a further report to the British Association that year. |
