TitleLetter from S[tephen] P[eter] Rigaud, Oxford, to Francis Baily, Tavistock Place, Tavistock Square
Date21 December 1837
DescriptionDoes not like a service in which he has been enlisted by Baily [likely writing the paper against Panizzi], but is willing to to 'do good by drawing the enemy's fire' on himself. Does not see any occasion for formally publishing his name, offering instead to sign as 'a member of the catalogue committee'. Therefore if anyone were left at liberty to say who that member was there could be no accusation of 'stabbing in the back'. Is hesitating, but adds that if the paper is not fit to go abroad in its present state, he will endeavour to put it in better order. Asks Baily to refer to him if any connections occur to him, and to let him know if Baily thinks it worthwile to consult any friend in confidence [underlined]. Asks Baily help with information on three points in regards to his paper [replies written in different coloured ink]. Adds that if any of the points give Baily any trouble he would come to London in the next week, and this delay would give Rigaud more time for thinking about the main question of publishing. Wishes many happy returns for the holiday season.
