Title | Letter from J[ohn] R[ichardson] Selwyn, Southern Cross at Sea, to [Henry Bowman Brady] |
Date | 20 November 1888 |
Description | Is afraid that his collections for Brady this year are not very extensive, but thinks one or two will prove to be interesting. These will be an addition to the group of specimens Brady already had from Guppy. Had had great hopes of finding something for Brady in the Island of Santa Maria; describes the island and specimens he found, including a small drawing of the island's soil at sea level. Was surprised when he heard that Guppy's impeachment of Darwin's theory was novel as to himself and others working in the islands [in Melanesia] it had all along seemed very hard to reconcile Darwin's theory with the facts as they saw them. Gives examples of findings in the islands that go against Darwin's theory. Offers to answer any questions Brady might have. Will send full descriptions of the rocks and places 'in the box' as soon as he gets back to Sydney in a few weeks. Pasted between pages 27 and 28. |
