| Description | He thanks Kater for the trouble taken concerning his escapement and explains how he would like to replace detents with 'a particular apparatus', giving a sketch. The method has been anticipated by [Gaspard de] Prony who has referred Sir Charles Blagden to 'Leçons de mécanique analytique', now sent to the Royal Society and Mr [Stephen] Lee can show this to Kater. Young asks about the apparatus Kater was developing to find the exact centre of oscillation, saying that Young must talk with [Edward] Troughton about it. It must be as light as possible and he wonders if it would be possible to have tubes of platina drawn. He is glad that Kater is near to havign a permanent residence. He expects to see [Joseph Louis] Gay-Lussac and [Francois] Arago in a few days and may sent them to Kater. Mrs Young has received the cotton from Mrs [Mary Frances] Kater, who is now wearing it in Lady Dudley's carriage. |
