TitleLetter from John Brinkley, Observatory, Dublin, to 'Dear Sir' [Henry Kater]
CreatorBrinkley; John (1766/7-1835); British mathematician and astronomer
RecipientKater; Henry (1777-1835); British geodicist and metrologist
Date25 March 1820
DescriptionHe gives thanks for Kater's valuable paper. He had not received the last paper, as that part of the Transactions had not yet been sent to him. He objects to one thing in the work, the reduction of the latitude of Greenwich. He only know Mr. [John] Pond's observations of Draconis as sufficient authority, He refers to other observations by General [William] Mudge, Pond and [James] Bradley; these give the latitude which [Friedrich Wilhelm] Bessel contended was correct. There are inaccuracies in Mudge's reductions in the 1800 Philosophical Transactions, which Brinkley has recomputed and he notes others to recompute. He sends an addition to his tables of refracation and he will send a copy of the paper he is publishing in the Transactions of the [Royal Irish] Academy. He does not know of his, Bessel's or [Thomas] Young's values will be found correct.

With a table of stellar observations to determine the latitude of Greenwich.
