Title | Letter from [François] Arago, l'Observatoire Royal, Rue d'Enferto, to Captain [Henry] Kater, 1 Union Place, Regent's Park, London |
Creator | Arago; Dominque François Jean (1786-1853); French mathematician and astronomer |
Recipient | Kater; Henry (1777-1835); British geodicist and metrologist |
Date | 27 August 1821 |
Description | Laplace has just informed him that the Minister has given authority for their joint triangulation, so there will be no delay on the French side. If Kater has similar authorisation, and can begin with preliminaries before Colby's arrival, he should let Arago know, and he will hurry to rendezvous at Dover or Calais. There is no time to be lost, as operations will be easier in this season; later there will be obstacles and Kater's health is no better than Arago's. He approves of the new rope and thinks that the theodolite should be brought along, as Kater's telescope is not fixed strongly enough. He does not wish to write at greater length to ensure that his letter leaves that day. |
