Creator | Humboldt; Friedrich Wilhelm Heinrich Alexander von (1769 - 1859); naturalist and traveller |
Recipient | Kater; Henry (1777-1835); British geodicist and metrologist |
Date | 24 October 1823 |
Description | Humboldt and [Pierre Simon] de la Place hope to see Kater and his wife in Paris. He asks for advice in his researches in geology and agricultural geography, on points where Kater may give him precise information. He discusses the trade and cultivation of European wheat in Spanish colonies, the cultivation of wheat in Cuba and elsewhere. He has been told that wheat is cultivated by the sea in the Indies and at Mysore, a 400 metre plateau. He asks Kater what the limits are in growing such wheat, in terms of position and temperature. He also asks about rock strata in Mysore, their parallelism, and barometer variations in India. He notes his congress stay in Verona, trips to Rome and Berlin, with other activities. He exchanges greetings, concluding with wishes to Mrs Kater, to [James] Pound, Sir Humphry and Lady Davy, Mrs Wollaston, Brown and to [Thomas] Young. |
