| Title | Letter from Alexander Johnson, 5 Prince of Wales Terrace, Montreal, Canada, to Thos [Thomas] Preston, 22 Trinity College, Dublin, Ireland |
| Creator | Johnson; Alexander (1830-1912); Irish mathematician |
| Recipient | Preston; Thomas (1860-1900); Irish physicist |
| Date | 3 July 1890 |
| Description | Johnson thanks Preston for receiving the remainder of his work on light. He may have heard of the Governor's decision about the professorship; nevertheless Johnson has not given up the idea of having Preston as a colleague. Johnson has the work of two Chairs, mathematics and natural philosophy, and a division is necessary if standards are to be maintained. He wishes to retain natural philosophy, if a mathematical chair can be established. They hope to have a large donation to enable the creation of new chairs. The Chair of Mathematics should be offered to Preston, and Johnson has been asked if Preston would accept it, but he could not speak for him. He has done his best for Preston. In the list of benefactions there is an endowment for a College of Women, and it means that Johnson will have to give double lectures, one for men and one for women |
