The papers in this collection illustrates Bartlett's career from his university days through to his retirement. There are research notes, lecture notes, handwritten drafts of papers, and personal and professional correspondence. His seminal text 'An introduction to stochastic processes' (1955) is traced through its various editions. Bartlett's relationship with the Royal Society and the Royal Statistical Society are well represented, and Bartlett's artistic talents are demonstrated through a selection of his sketches and designs. |
| AdminHistory | Born in Chiswick in 1910, Maurice Stevenson Bartlett won a scholarship to Latymer Upper School. In 1929, he was awarded a state scholarship to Queens' College, Cambridge, where he read mathematics. There he enjoyed attending a variety of lectures with notable academics, including John Wishart, Arthur Eddington and Paul Dirac. After Cambridge he held a variety of posts, both in industry (at the ICI Agricultural Research Station) and in academia (at University of Cambridge, University of Manchester, University College London, University of Oxford). He was an active member of the Royal Society and the Royal Statistical Society. |
