Apprentice at a solicitors in Swansea (1826); qualified as a barrister (1838); called to the bar (1856); pursued his passion for conchology and the biology of molluscs; retired from the legal profession (1886); partook in dredging operations in the Irish Sea, the English Channel, seas around Hetland Islands, and the west of Scotland, as well as expeditions in Norway; partook in the Porcupine expeditions (1869-1870); Valorous expedition to Greenland (1875); French Travailleur expedition (1880); moved from London to Aware, Hertfordshire, and bought the Greyfriars Priory which turned into a meeting place for British and foreign artists (1866); Justice of the Peace for Glamorgan, Brecon, and Hertfordshire (1877); died of apoplexy.
