Apprenticed to an apothecary, Harris, in Loughborough; both moved to Mountsorrel during the apprenticeship; practised as a surgeon and apothecary, Leicester; wrote for 'Gentleman's magazine'; came to London; Physician to William Pulteney, Earl of Bath (1764); practised as a physician, Blandford, Dorset; died of pneumonia; bequeathed his museum of shells and minerals, and his herbarium, to the Linnean Society; monument in Blandford Church
