Compiled catalogues of the manuscripts in Coventry School and St Mary's church, Warwick; Assistant in the Bodleian Library (1696-1700); on behalf of George Hickes travelled through England in search of Anglo-Saxon manuscripts (1699-1700); appointed Deputy Secretary of the Society for Promoting Christian Knowledge (SPCK) through the influence of Robert Nelson FRS (1680) (1700-1702); Secretary, SPCK (1702-1708); Librarian to Robert Harley, 1st Earl of Oxford (FRS 1712) (1708) and to his son, Edward, 2nd Earl of Oxford (FRS 1727) (1711); employed by the Royal Society; died of dropsy; his collection of bibles and prayer books was bought by St Paul's Cathedral
