Postgraduate work, Liverpool University (for 1 year); Algologist (later known as phycologist), University Marine Station, Port Erin, Isle of Man (1930) studying oysters; Plymouth Laboratory, Marine Biological Association (1941) to assess Britain's seaweed resources; Botanist, Marine Biological Association (1947); collaborated with Irene Manton (FRS 1961) over the use of the electron microscope; helped establish the Culture Collection of Algae and Protozoa, housed at Cambridge; her own collection is known as the Plymouth Culture Collection and is managed by the Plymouth Marine Laboratory; editor, British Phycological Journal; Mary Parke Bursary was set up in her memory by the Marine Biological Association and the British Phycological Society; retired but continued working in the laboratory at Plymouth (1973); died from septicaemia, cremated with her ashes scattered at sea.
