Investigated Cornish tin deposits; was the first to show that the mineral dolomite was not just a mixture of magnesium and clacium carbonates, but a double salt (1779); friend of Joseph Priestley; invented Woulfe's Bottle - a two-necked flask; investigated preparation of mosaic gold (tin sulphide); appointed to a commission along with Richard Kirwan, FRS and Bryan Higgins to examine the claims of Dr Price of Guidford who presented George III with samples of 'gold' that he claimed to have obtained by 'transmutation'
