Fletcher's Grammar School in Southwell, Nottinghamshire; The Royal Navy Academy, Gosport; King's College, London Career: joined the Royal Welch Fusiliers, serving in the Crimea, India during the mutiny, Malta, England, and Ireland; Captain, Royal Engineers; studied geology and worked with the geological survey in southern England, Sandhurst (1860-1861); retired from the army with the rank of captain (1865); emigrated to Auckland, New Zealand (1866); assistant geologist in the New Zealand geological survey (1871); provincial geologist of Otago and at the same time was appointed curator of the provincial museum and lecturer in geology at the university (1873); Professor of Geology, Canterbury College, Christchurch, New Zealand (1877-1892); then curator of the museum (1892-1905).
