Undertook posdoctoral training in neurobiology and molecular pharmacology as a Muscular Dystrophy Association Fellow with Marshall Nirenberg (1972-1974); Associate professor of pharmacology, School of Medicine, University of Washington (1977); earned full professorship (1981); served as chair of the University of Washington's pharmacology department (1984-2016); published widely and trained many scientists at his lab; died suddenly of cardiac arrest whilst snorkeling, whislt attending the Sixth International Calcium Channel Conference.
