| Description | Thanks Rayleigh for his letter of the 22nd and has communicated with the chairman of the Physics and Chemistry Committee as to dealing with the papers which Rayleigh accepted.
Regarding Mr [Joseph Norman] Lockyer's remarks on process, the engraver Mr Collings, has always been found to deal uprightly in his Society work and Collings' opinion as expert was given as to which drawings were more suitable for process and which for woodcutting. Illustrations sent in with papers are frequently so badly finished that they would in any case have to be redrawn before being reproduced, whether by process or woodcutting and any saving of expense by adoption of process work is thus done away with.
Only the other day Harrison received back from the first referee, Professor G C Foster, a paper by Wildermann on 'Freezing Points' which was sent out in February. The second referee named by the Committee of Papers was Dr [Arthur] Schuster, who is now abroad and does not wish the paper sent. Foster suggested Harrison ask Rayleigh for another referee. As the paper is one which came in under the old system it is not a matter for the Sectional Committee. |
