Title | Copy letter from Arthur William Rucker, to the Secretary to Her Majesty's Treasury, Whitehall, S.W. |
Date | 11 January 1898 |
Description | With reference to the Secretary's letter of the 31st, 19259/97, the President and Council shortly hope to be in a position to submit to the Lords of Treasury, the name of a gentlemen competent and willing to act as a delegate from Great Britain to the International Geodetic Association. The action will be facilitated by a clear understanding as to the allowances which are to be made to the delegate by the Treasury.
Notes the constitution of the Association has lately been altered in several particulars, with Permanent Delegates only meeting once in three years, unless very special circumstances make it necessary to call them together in the interval. The triennial conference lasts from a week to ten days and the President and Council desire him to point out that if the delegate is not in the service of the Government, it will probably be desirable to offer to him some remuneration. The case most nearly under consideration is that of the fees paid to distinguished scientific men for lectures delivered at a distance. A fee of £200 including expenses is not uncommonly offered to an English man of science for a course of six lectures to be given in America and the Royal Dublin Society offers £20 for a single lecture, or of £30 for two, to be given in Dublin. Rucker suggests that railway expenses to the place of meeting and a fee of £10 a day to cover all other expenses, would be a reasonable allowance to make to the British Delegate. Asks if the Treasury would sanction such a payment.
The International Geodetic Association has informed the Royal Society that the Bureau has not yet come to a decision as to the time at which the next general Conference will be held, but that most probably it will be summoned for next autumn, and that if so, the session may last for eight days. |
