Title | Copy letter from Michael Foster, to Dr James William Watson Stephens and Dr Samuel Rickard Christophers, [Fellows of the Royal Society], Blantyre, British Central Africa |
Date | 28 July 1899 |
Description | On receiving Christophers and Stephens' first telegram the Committee decided to approve their proposal to leave their present station. Shortly afterwards Daniels' report came to hand and the Committee were much impressed with it. This led the Committee to send their second telegram. On receipt of Christophers and Stephens' second telegram, the Committee decided to accede to their request to be allowed to return.
Discusses how the researches of Ross and the Italian observers having established beyond doubt that certain species of mosquito do act as agents of infection would have affected the Committee's recommendations. The Committee now sanction Stephens and Christophers wish to leave and propose the two men come straight to England and then proceed to the West Coast of Africa. An exact location has not yet been determined. Notes their researches must be carried on under innumerable disadvantages and that the success of any observer under such circumstances must largely depend on the ability with which he makes the most of such scanty and rough opportunities as are afforded to him.
As Christophers and Stephens are both of the opinion that the circumstances under which they are working in British Central Africa are such that they cannot expect to throw light on the nature of the malaria and black-water fever occurring there, they certainly had better leave. Asks the two men to wire their intended movements. |
