| Description | H M Treasury objected to the arrangements being made toward the Malta Fever enquiry. Consequently Read of the Colonial Office and Chalmers of the Treasury had an interview at the Royal Society. Chalmers said that the Treasury would defray the cost of personal expenses, but the Royal Society should pay towards the scientific equipment. Geikie objected strongly to this delay and said it was urgent that the epidemiologist Dr R W Johnston [sic] departs. Council approved Chalmers' proposal and Johnston has left. No message has come if he has started work yet.
Geikie complains it is a vexatious waste of time, and laments it is characteristic of the Treasury and its ways. Explains that applications for scientific equipment will come first to Bruce, but the Royal Society does not wish to exceed spending £200. |
