TitleCopy letter from Joseph Larmor and Archibald Geikie, to the Secretary, His Majesty's Treasury
Date23 February 1905
DescriptionAcknowledge Sir G H Murray's letter of 21 January 1905, and conveys the thanks of the President and Council for the early intimation of the intention of the Lords Commissioners of His Majesty's Treasury with regard to the future control of the Meteorological Service. No reference is made to the possible alternative indicated in the Society's letter of 8 November 1904. The President and Council regret that as their Lordships have not found it possible to entertain either of their suggested plans for obtaining the funds recommended by the late Committee desired for improving the efficiency of the Meteorological Service, the connection of the Society with it must terminate.

The cessation of any connection between the Meteorological Service and expert scientific opinion will throw the difficult task of devising improvement in the scientific methods of the Service upon the Director. The President and Council of the Royal Society cannot doubt that their Lordships will arrange plans for providing the Director with some efficient substitute for the expert guidance of the present Council.

The Society notes their sense of the high service rendered to the public and to scientific progress by the Meteorological Council. Such work as that of Sir G G Stokes, Professor H J S Smith and living members of the Council does not usually attract public attention and it is known only to a few experts how much the community is indebted to them.
