| Description | In reply to Suess' note Geikie sends the decision arrived at by his Seismological Committee in regard to the proposal made from Berlin; that the Society should send a delegate to a proposed conference regarding the conclusions arrived at by the Convention at Frankfort last year. The Committee recommends the Council of the Royal Society advise the the British Government to appoint a delegate to attend the meeting in Berlin on 15 August but they expressly stipulate that the compromise arrived at in Frankfort shall in no essential particular be modified. The Committee thought it would be more courteous to send a delegate than to refuse, but the instructions to be given to the delegate should clearly state that he is not authorized to consent to any essential modifications of the Frankfort agreement. The Council meets on 6 July and he has no doubt it will adopt the recommendation of the Committee. In that case the Government will be advised to send a delegate with the instructions Geikie has indicated, and also to cujoin [sic] with him a member of the Embassy in Berlin, who is acquainted with legals matters and the nature of German diplomacy.
If Suess' Government were to send a delegate, Geikie presumes it would only be as a matter of courtesy after the trouble taken at Frankfort. The Royal Society does not think any further conference is needed, except to confirm and adopt the decisions there agreed on. |
