Title | Copy letter from Archibald Geikie, to the Under Secretary of State, India Office |
Date | 12 August 1905 |
Description | Writes in reference to the Under Secretary's letter of 4 April 1905 on the suggestions made by the Advisory Committee of the Royal Society regarding the investigation of diseases of animals in India. The Committee appointed by the Royal Society to advise on such matters has held a meeting at which the 'Report on Veterinary Bacteriological Investigation' was considered. The committee disagree with paragraph eighteen on the report and insist investigation into local disease, to be fruitful, must frequently be carried out on the spot where it occurs. The Committee strongly think every effort should be made to encourage scientific enterprise among the ordinary veterinary executive.
The Committee also considered the 'Programme of work of the various scientific Department for the year 1905-6' enclosed with the Under Secretary's letter of 27 June 1905. Provides the following conclusions arrived at by the Committee: that they do not quite understand what is meant by raising the potency of the anti-rinderpest serum; that Piroplasmosis and Trypanosomiasis could most effectively be studied in the field; and that they regret no result has followed the suggestion made by the Committee in Sir M Foster's report of 17 December 1903 regarding the study of the natural history of the Carra Trypanosoma or Dourine.
The Committee do not propose to make any remarks on the further points in the extended programme submitted to them as it is humanly impracticable for even a fractional part to be carried through to success within any limited period of time. A more restricted programme and the concentration of effort on a few pressing problems would lead to results of more practical value.
There will be a meeting of the Observatories Committee after the vacation. |
