Title | Copy letter from Archibald Geikie, to Professor [John] Milne, [Fellow of the Royal Society] |
Date | 6 November 1905 |
Description | Can now reply to Milne's letter of 3 November enclosing one from Dr [Charles] Chree. Recommends Milne sends the films to the Society until it is decided where they should ultimately go.
Returns Chree's letter [not enclosed]. It is clear Chree and Milne are on wholly divergent track and no agreement between them is likely to be reached until they meet. When Milne is better suggests he call on Chree at Kew and the Society will gladly defray his costs.
Thinks Milne has heard the results of the Seismological Committee's deliberations last week. Is annotated at the Treasury's decision to leave the Society to [?] Milne' observations out of the Government Grant Fund and declining to put any vote for Milne on the estimates. Thinks their decision put the Society in some respects in a stronger position with regard to the use to which they can put the Government Grant.
Thinks a combined effort of the Boards A and D of the Government Grant should be made to place Seismological Work on a more satisfactory footing and wishes for any suggestions from Milne on his suggestion. Thinks the two Boards should propose a grant of £250 or £300 a year for a definite period. If the International Organisation then collapses, or if from any cause Britain ceases to make its annual contribution of £200 to that Organisation, the Society might consider whether to ask the Treasury to contribute the sum, either directly or by addition to the Government Grant towards Milne's work.
Thinks they should aim to secure for Milne an effective assistant, a young fellow with a sufficient scientific education capable of acting efficiently under Milne and during his temporary absence. Asks to know if this scheme appeals. |
