| Description | In reponse to the letter from Mr Antrobus, enclosing a copy of a despatch from the Governor of the Leeward Islands regarding the establishment of a volcano and earthquake observatory in the colony, Geikie informs him that the question has been submitted to the Seismological Committee of the Royal Society, who agreed that such an observatory should be established. They think that it might be set up in Antigua, if a qualified observer can be secured. Presumably correct time can be obtained there.
It is suggested that a seismograph of the type adopted by the British Association should be procured. The Governor may think that a series of instruments and the erection of a building would be needed, involving considerable outlay. However only the seismograph would be needed, and the installation would not be expensive. If or when this has been obtained, the Committee wishes that results are communicated to Dr John Milne, who correlates global seismological data. |
