| Description | He will be aware from correspondence between Sir William Huggins and Mr Newall, which has been considered by the Cambridge Observatory Syndicate, that Huggins now wishes to relinquish the care of the stellar spectroscopic equipment that was placed in his hands by the Royal Society in 1871, with such important results for astronomy.
The Royal Society have recorded their willingness to present the telescopes as a gift to the Astrophysical Department of the Cambridge Observatory, subject to an assurance of their permanent profitable employment being obtained.
The resolution of the syndicate in this regard is satisfactory.
Larmor and Geikie therefore have the pleasure of conveying formal intimation that the Royal Society are willing to transfer this installation permanently to the University, under the conditions previously mentioned. The expense of moving the equipment will be borne by Cambridge Observatory.
A further condition they wish to impose, is that the name of Huggins is permanently connected with the instruments. |
