Description | In reply to Lee's query Rix can say nothing definite but he doubts there were two Francis Hawksbees. The Hawksbee who was clerk and housekeeper was elected to that office 9 May 1723. Due to the statutes in force at that time he would have had to have resigned his Fellowship, had he been a Fellow, but no mention is made of this. The minute book states he was a person known to 'divers members of the Society' which would be consistent with his being a son or relative of F. Hawksbee the FRS. Considering the numbers of letters the Society have to write and researches they have to make for Lee and his Colleagues, Rix thinks the Society ought to be given a copy of the Dictionary [of National Biography]. |
